Rear Brake Replacement

Recently, I have gotten the chance to replace my rear brakes.  It has been 11200 mile of mostly in city riding.  The task was not as hard as it looks.  Included at the bottom are some pdf files of the official BMW F650 repair manual that I copied.  Replacing the rear brakes also gives you the chance to clean all that grease the chain leaves everywhere.  =)

Steps:

  1. Remove the wheel cover and chain guard.   This comes off easily with the allen wrench tools that came with the bike.

  2. Knock out the retaining pin on the top part of the brakes.  You need to drive the pin towards the wheel for removal.   Don't forget to take off the split pin first. =)

  3. Now remove the rear wheel.  This sounds scary if you have never done it before, but its not bad at all. (In your Tech manual there is instructions for this too.) First, you need to unfasten the nut on the right side.  Then loosen the chain tensioning screws on both sides.  Then push the wheel as far forward (towards the shock) and then remove the chain from the sprocket.   Then support the wheel with someone helping or as in my case, my feet and pull the axle straight out the left side.  Carefully let the wheel come out to the rear while supporting the brake caliper.  There the wheel is off.    Easy huh?

  4. The brake pads will now just about fall out of the caliper.  The BMW brake kit comes with all the replacement pieces (retaining pin, split pin, etc)  Just replace those where you found the old ones.   Easy.

  5. Make sure the brake fluid level is at the min level or below.  You will need to press the brake piston back into the caliper.   The BMW manual shows a special tool for this.  I just pressed it with my hands since the brake fluid was low and I left the cap unsecured so there was no pressure.

  6. Install new brake pads.  I used the old retaining pin to wedge between the new pads to hold them in place.  You will see why when you reinstall the wheel.

  7. Install wheel in reverse order and then check fluid level, put the cap back on and press the brake a couple of times to make sure there is contact.

  8. Warning, the brakes did not work at 100% until I used them for a few minutes.

That's it!!  If you have questions, let me know.
